What Is 14K Gold?
14 karat gold contains 14 parts pure gold out of 24, making it 58.33% gold by weight. The remaining 41.67% consists of other metals — typically copper, silver, zinc or nickel — which are added to increase hardness and durability.
14K Gold Hallmarks to Look For
Genuine 14K gold items are stamped with one of the following hallmarks:
- 14K or 14kt — most common in the United States
- 585 — the European millesimal fineness mark (585 = 58.5% pure gold)
- 14ct — British and Australian spelling
- AU585 or Au14K — less common variations
Items marked "14K GF" (gold-filled) or "14K GP" (gold plated) are NOT solid 14K gold and have significantly lower melt value.
14K vs 18K vs 10K Gold — Which Is Better?
The right karat depends on use case and budget. Here is a quick comparison:
- 10K gold (41.67% pure): Most durable, lowest gold content, least expensive. Common in fashion jewellery.
- 14K gold (58.33% pure): Best balance of durability and gold content. Most popular in the US for engagement rings and everyday jewellery.
- 18K gold (75% pure): Richer colour, higher value, slightly softer. Most popular in Europe and Asia for fine jewellery.
- 24K gold (99.99% pure): Pure gold — too soft for most jewellery. Used for bullion, coins and some specialist pieces.
How the 14K Gold Price Per Gram Is Calculated
The formula is straightforward:
14K gold price per gram = (Gold spot price per troy oz ÷ 31.1035) × 0.5833
For example: if gold spot is $3,300/oz → $3,300 ÷ 31.1035 = $106.09/g (24K) → × 0.5833 = $61.88/g (14K).
The melt value is the intrinsic value of the gold content only. Jewellery dealers typically offer 70–80% of melt value for scrap gold purchases. Retail jewellery prices include significant markups above melt value.
